Pronunciation guide to the Hungarian words

Vowels

y: at the end of old surnames it means usually i

Consonants

b, d, f, h, k, l, m, n, p, r (always strong), t, v, z: they are the same as in English
c: say t and z at the same time, same as the German z in the Zeit
cs: ch in the child
g: in the game
gy: the first consonant in the duke
j: y in the year
ly: y in the year, in old names at the end of the surname usually: li. Long time ago it sounded different than j.
ny: n in the new (GB), say n and y (year) at the same time
s: sh in the shield
sz: s in the spell
ty: tth in the Matthew
zs: s in the usual

Long consonants are written with double letters e.g.: gg. In the case of the consonants signed with two letters double the first one e.g. ssz means ss.

This is the base situation, but the business is more difficult in the words. Sometimes it would be very hard to pronounce the consonants writed after each other. In this case try to say it easily, the consonants will change to another consonant. E.g. játszik (he/she plays)-> jáccik. This rule is used mainly at the suffixes, therefore you cannot worry about it very much.
